Asphalt Tonnage Formula
The calculator converts pavement dimensions into compacted volume, applies asphalt density, and converts pounds to U.S. short tons.
Tons = Area (ft²) × Thickness (in ÷ 12) × Density (lb/ft³) ÷ 2,000
If you enter an overage percentage, the calculator then multiplies the base tonnage by 1 + overage percentage. The final rounded quantity is rounded upward to the nearest 0.1 ton for planning.
Example: 1,000 Square Feet at 3 Inches
Assume a rectangular paving area measuring 50 feet by 20 feet. That equals 1,000 square feet. At a compacted thickness of 3 inches, the volume is 250 cubic feet, or about 9.26 cubic yards.
- Area: 50 ft × 20 ft = 1,000 sq ft
- Thickness: 3 in ÷ 12 = 0.25 ft
- Volume: 1,000 × 0.25 = 250 ft³
- Weight: 250 × 145.2 = 36,300 lb
- Base tonnage: 36,300 ÷ 2,000 = 18.15 tons
- With 5% planning overage: 19.06 tons
- Rounded upward to 0.1 ton: 19.1 tons

Thickness has a direct linear effect on quantity. At the same area and density, a 4-inch lift requires twice the tonnage of a 2-inch lift.
How to Measure the Paving Area
For a rectangle, multiply length by width. A 60-foot-long driveway that is 12 feet wide contains 720 square feet. For an irregular parking lot or driveway, split the pavement into simple rectangles, calculate each area, and add them together.
If you already know the total square footage from plans, takeoffs, GIS measurements, or field measurements, enter it directly in the calculator’s Project area field. A direct area entry takes priority over the length and width fields.
Compacted Thickness Matters
Enter the compacted pavement thickness required by the project rather than guessing from loose material depth. The correct thickness depends on pavement design, traffic loading, subgrade and base conditions, climate, mix type, and project specifications.
This calculator does not select a pavement thickness for you. For engineered or public work, use the thickness shown in the approved plans and specifications. For private work, confirm the proposed compacted thickness with the contractor or pavement professional.
What Asphalt Density Should You Use?
The Federal Highway Administration’s estimating table lists Hot Asphalt Mix at 145.2 lb/ft³ (2,325 kg/m³). That is why the calculator uses 145.2 as its default planning value.
Do not treat 145.2 lb/ft³ as a universal mix property. Asphalt density varies with aggregate, binder content, gradation, air voids, compaction, and the specific mixture. If the producer, project specification, laboratory report, or job mix formula gives you a more relevant density, enter that number instead.
FHWA also emphasizes that in-place pavement density is important to asphalt performance. The quantity calculator therefore exposes density as an editable input rather than hiding it inside a fixed conversion.
Should You Add Overage?
The calculator includes a default 5% overage / contingency field, but that number is only a planning input and can be changed to zero. Actual ordering allowances depend on project geometry, surface variation, yield tracking, truck quantities, waste, tie-ins, handwork, and contractor production practices.
For bidding or purchasing, use the contractor’s takeoff and the plant’s actual mix information. Avoid adding multiple contingency factors in different parts of an estimate, because that can double-count the same risk.
Driveway Tonnage Example
A 60 ft × 12 ft driveway has 720 square feet. At 2.5 inches compacted thickness and 145.2 lb/ft³ density:
- Volume: 720 × (2.5 ÷ 12) = 150 ft³
- Base asphalt: 150 × 145.2 ÷ 2,000 = 10.89 tons
- With 5% overage: 11.43 tons
- Rounded planning quantity: 11.5 tons
Parking Lot Tonnage Example
A 120 ft × 80 ft parking area contains 9,600 square feet. At 3 inches compacted thickness and the default density:
- Volume: 9,600 × 0.25 = 2,400 ft³
- Base asphalt: 2,400 × 145.2 ÷ 2,000 = 174.24 tons
- With 5% overage: 182.95 tons
- Rounded planning quantity: 183.0 tons
Tons vs. Cubic Yards
Cubic yards measure volume; tons measure weight. Asphalt is normally ordered and tracked by weight, so you cannot convert cubic yards to tons accurately without a density assumption.
Cubic yards = cubic feet ÷ 27
Tons = cubic feet × density ÷ 2,000
Common Asphalt Tonnage Estimating Mistakes
- Using inches as feet: always divide thickness in inches by 12 before multiplying volume.
- Ignoring density: volume alone does not determine tons.
- Using loose thickness: project quantities should be based on the intended compacted section unless the specification states otherwise.
- Forgetting irregular areas: islands, tapers, radii, excluded concrete, and non-paved sections change total area.
- Using one density for every mix: replace the planning default when project-specific mix data is available.
- Double-counting contingency: confirm whether the takeoff already contains an allowance before adding another percentage.
