Asphalt Tonnage Formula
The material calculation uses area, compacted thickness, and density:
Asphalt tons = Area (ft²) × Thickness (in ÷ 12) × Density (lb/ft³) ÷ 2,000
The default density is 145.2 lb/ft³, which the Federal Highway Administration publishes as an estimating unit weight for Hot Asphalt Mix. Actual mixes can differ, so use project-specific mix density when available.

Example: 1,000 Square Feet of New Asphalt
Using the calculator’s starting assumptions for a 1,000-square-foot area at 3 inches compacted thickness:

Those inputs produce an estimated total of roughly $8,826, or about $8.83 per square foot. The important part is not the default total; it is that every cost component can be replaced with a local quote or contractor assumption.
New Paving vs. Replacement vs. Overlay
New asphalt paving
New paving may require excavation, grading, drainage work, aggregate base, compaction, and new asphalt. The condition of the subgrade and the pavement design can have as much influence on total cost as the asphalt itself.
Remove and replace
Replacement adds demolition, loading, hauling, disposal or recycling, and often base correction before new asphalt is placed. That is why replacement commonly carries a higher per-square-foot price than a new installation on an already prepared site.
Asphalt overlay
An overlay can cost less when the existing pavement and base are structurally suitable. Milling, edge transitions, failed areas, drainage, elevation constraints, and extensive cracking can add cost or make a simple overlay inappropriate.
What Changes Asphalt Paving Cost?
Project size and mobilization
Pavers, rollers, trucks, crews, and material deliveries create costs that do not scale perfectly with square footage. Small jobs can therefore have a higher effective cost per square foot, while large accessible projects may spread mobilization over more area.
Base condition and grading
Soft subgrade, poor drainage, unsuitable aggregate, settlement, or major elevation corrections can increase excavation, stone, compaction, and labor. A low paving price is not useful if the underlying pavement section is inadequate for the intended traffic.
Asphalt thickness
Increasing compacted thickness increases asphalt tonnage directly. The correct pavement section depends on traffic loading, soil, climate, drainage, base thickness, mixture, and project requirements. This calculator estimates quantity from a thickness you provide; it does not design the pavement structure.
Material and trucking prices
Hot mix asphalt prices vary by market, mixture, order size, plant availability, fuel conditions, and haul distance. Replace the calculator’s sample $100-per-ton field with a delivered local price whenever possible. Material pricing references also show that delivery and mixture type can materially change the plant price.
Removal and disposal
Existing asphalt or concrete may need to be milled, broken, loaded, hauled, recycled, or disposed of. Removal depth, access, trucking distance, disposal fees, and whether reclaimed asphalt has value all affect the number.
Drainage, traffic control, permits, and specialty work
Catch basins, trench drains, utility adjustments, curbs, ADA transitions, traffic control, permits, night work, phased access, striping, wheel stops, and other scope items can sit outside a basic asphalt price. Asphalt Cost Per Ton vs. Cost Per Square Foot
Cost per ton is useful for asphalt material procurement. Cost per square foot is more useful for communicating an installed project budget because it can include labor, equipment, preparation, removal, mobilization, and other scope.
Two jobs using the same number of tons can have very different total prices if one has easy access and a sound base while the other requires demolition, grading, drainage correction, handwork, and traffic control.
